BJ The Chicago Kid Bio

Bryan James Sledge (November 23, 1984), widely known as BJ The Chicago Kid or BJ, is an American singer and songwriter native to Chicago, Illinois. BJ is primarily known for his collaborations for big rappers such as Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul from record label Top Dawg Entertainment. He began his career in Los Angeles where he became the back-up vocalist for several artists, his first being for Mary Mary, an American gospel duo, followed by his feature on Stevie Wonder’s album, ‘A Time to Love’ (2005) and Kanye West’s iconic, ‘Impossible’ along with R&B singer Keyshia Cole and rapper Twista. From 2009-2011, BJ released three mixtapes; ‘A Taste of Chicago’ (2009), ‘The New Beginning’ (2010) and ‘The Life of Love’s Cupid’ (2011). It was not until 2012 that BJ self-released his debut album, ‘Pineapple Now-Laters’ featuring Kendrick Lamar on two of the tracks. ‘Pineapple Now-Laters’ led him to signing with Motown Records in the same year. Thriving as a collaborator, in 2014, BJ featured Schoolboy Q with his hit single, ‘Studio’ which landed at number 10 on the R&B/hip-hop charts and became a Grammy nominated single for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in the same year. After the successful hit, BJ released his first studio album through Motown Records titled, ‘In My Mind’, with features from Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre and Chance The Rapper. ‘In My Mind’ received 3 Grammy nominations for Best R&B Album, Best R&B Performance (for his track, ‘Turnin Me Up’) and Best Traditional R&B Performance (for ‘Women’s World’). The now 36 year old’s immense talent propelled his solo career and continues to aid artists such as Solange, Anderson .Paak, Common, Kehlani amongst many others. BJ has also performed at Barack Obama’s farewell address in 2010. BJ’s most recent album, ‘1123’, was released in 2019 and currently has 1.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
