DMX Bio

Born Earl Simmons on December 18, 1970, DMX rose to fame quickly after the deaths of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. DMX’s career in music began in the late 1980s when he started beatboxing, and in 1992, he was signed to Columbia Records shortly before releasing his debut single “Born Loser”, yet the single went largely unnoticed by the mainstream radio. After leaving Columbia Records, DMX released the 1994 single “Make a Move”, and later provided a vocal appearance on the Mic Geronimo single “Time to Build” along with Jay-Z and Ja Rule. DMX was signed to Def Jam Recordings, through whom he released his single “Get at Me Dog”, which eventually went Gold. He then released his debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, carried by the single “Ruff Ryders Anthem” in 1998. DMX’s first album sold more than 5 million copies and went to #1 on the Billboard 200. That same year, he released the album Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, which was his second #1 album on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum.

DMX would go on to release …And Then There Was X in 1999, carried by the singles “Party Up” and “What’s My Name”; The Great Depression in 2001, which went again to #1; Grand Champ in 2003, featuring the single “Get in on the Floor”; and Year of the Dog…Again in 2006. After performing at the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards, he released the album Undisputed in 2012. DMX has been nominated for a handful of awards, and won the 2000 American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist.
