Edwin Eugene Aldrin (popularly known as Buzz Aldrin) is an American former astronaut, engineer, and fighter pilot. He was born on January 20, 1930, in Montclair, New Jersey, U.S, and was raised in the same town. Aldrin graduated one year earlier from Montclair High school and moved on to the US Military Academy at West Point. He graduated third in his class with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering.
Aldrin then joined the Air Force and was later decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross. After a tour of duty in Germany flying F100′s, he earned his Doctorate of Science in Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and wrote a thesis on Manned Orbital Rendezvous. He was selected by NASA in 1963 and on July 20 1969 was the second man to set his foot on the moon with Neil Armstrong.
Upon their return, Aldrin was decorated with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and numerous other awards all over the world. Buzz also wrote 9 books and the most recent being the children’s book, Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet.
