Doc Brown, born as Ben Bailey Smith on September 21st, 1977 in London, England is a rapper, comedian, and television actor based in the U.K. Doc gained his current rap moniker in high school after Doctor Brown, the scientist from the Back to the Future movies, based on his nerdy and gangly appearance.
Doc began his music career as a battle rapper in 2000. He competed and hosted a number of events, growing his reputation, until he was invited to host a monthly open mic event at Deal Real Records. The event became so popular that it led to appearances from the Black Eyed Peas, Slick Rick, and Pete Rock. At this time Doc Brown’s first single “Donnie’s Lament” featuring Lowkey broke out to wide acclaim.
Doc Brown met the producer Mark Ronson at this event and went on tour with him until 2007. He released 3 mixtapes: Citizen Smith Volume One, The Document, and Citizen Smith Volume 2 at this time. In 2008 Doc Brown moved into the spheres of standup comedy and television, starring in the 4 O’Clock Club and Law & Order: UK.
