Paul Nicklen (born in 1968) is a Canadian photographer, filmmaker, and marine biologist. He grew up in the Canadian Arctic and has since taken a unique interest in creating a brand of documentary photography which informs and creates an emotional connection with wild subjects in extreme conditions.
As a young boy, Nicklen moved to Baffin Island and spent most of his childhood among the Inuit people. There, he developed a keen love for nature and an avid interest and understanding of icy ecosystems.
He has worked for the National Geographic magazine as an expedition photographer and stands out for his 'brand' of documentary photography. His work provides access to terrains and underwater realms that only a few people have been opportune to witness.
Nicklen has won over 30 of the highest awards given to any photographer in his field, including the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the prestigious World Press Photo for Photojournalism. He also received the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from his alma mater, the University of Victoria.
