Jeff Merkley is a politician born on 24th October 1956 in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, United States. He has served as the senator for Oregon since 2009. Jeff is a Democrat and was a speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives (2007 to 2009). He was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1998 and was unanimously voted speaker in the 74th Oregon Legislative Assembly.
In 2008, he was nominated under the Democrat ticket to challenge Gordon Smith. He defeated Smith narrowly, to clinch the senatorial seat. In January 2009, he resigned from the Oregon House in a letter to Bill Bradbury. That same month, he was sworn in as senator for Oregon State. In 2016, he was the only member of the senate to endorse Bernie Sanders to vie presidency under the Democratic ticket. He also voted against the confirmation of Ben Bernanke as chairman of the Federal Reserve.
