Robert Redford Bio

Robert Redford was born August 18, 1936 in Santa Monica, California. He started acting in television in the 1960s, earning an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in The Voice of Charlie Pont. He also starred on Broadway in Barefoot in the Park in 1963. His first movie role was War Hunt in 1962 before he shot to stardom for his role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Jeremiah Johnson in 1972 made him a household name, along with his role in 1973’s The Way We Were. He gained acclaim for his role in All the President’s Men (1976) and made his directorial debut in 1980 for Ordinary People, which won Best Picture and Best Director.

Out of Africa (1985) was a huge commercial success and won seven Oscars. Redford’s extensive career was honored in 2002 with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2010, Redford was named a chevalier in the Légion d’Honneur. He made the Time “Most Influential People in the World” list in 2014 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
