Yakov Naumovich Pokhis, better known as Yakov Smirnoff, is a Ukrainian-American comedian, actor, and writer. He was born in Odessa, Ukrainian, on January 24, 1951. In the late 1970s, Yakov began his career in entertainment as a stand-up comedian in Ukraine, and in 1977he moved to New York to continue as a stand-up comedian. Yakov eventually moved to Los Angeles where he began to make a name for himself performing at The Comedy Store. He became a household name in the 1980s when he was cast in several Hollywood films and starred in the film Heartburn alongside Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Jeff Daniels, and Anna Maria Horsford. Yakov also acted in the TV series The Love Boat, What a Country, Night Court, Major Dad, and Dice.
