Maria da Graça Costa Pena Burgos (popularly known by the moniker Gal Costa) is a Brazilian singer who was born on September 26th 1945 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Gal was encouraged by her dad to pursue a music career. She then teamed up with Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethania in 1963.
She later released her debut album Gal without her key writers but with the help of composer Macale. By the 1980s she was a superstar in Brazil and some of her songs were recorded by Jorge Ben Jor (Que Pena), Erasmos Carlos (Sua Estupidez) and Tom Jobim (Desifinados). Her second album Fantasia dropped in 1982 and spawned the hit carnival Festa Do Interior.
In 1973 her album India got censored and her 1982 single Festa do Interior from the Fantasia album and the single went multi-platinum and became her biggest hits ever. Gal later appeared in the 1995 film The Mandarin as the singer Carmen Miranda.
