Preservation Hall Jazz Bio
Preservation Hall Jazz Band chose its name based on Preservation Hall in New Orleans. As would be expected, they perform New Orleans-style jazz music.
The jazz theme of Preservation Hall has been around since the 1960’s, when it was one of the only interracial establishments in the area due to the Jim Crow laws. One of the owners of the hall, Allan Jaffe, decided that they should create a band to go on tour. They toured around the world and came out with Sweet Emma and Her Preservation Hall Jazz Band in 1964. Group members came in went throughout the next few decades, releasing several albums along the way.
The band won the National Medal of Arts in 2006, which is basically the United States’ top award for artists. They received this award from President George Bush. They also won the NAACP Image Award for their 50th anniversary album in 2013. Their most recent album, released in 2017, is titled So It Is.
