Marisa Monte Bio
Marisa Monte is a Brazilian singer and songwriter who was born on July 1st, 1967 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Carlos Monte was her father and he was a cultural director at the Portela samba school, immersing Marisa in Rio’s samba tradition. Marisa wanted to be an opera singer so she took the Escola Nacional de Música entrance exam. She was fourteen at the time. She later moved to Rome at 18 to pursue a career in classical music and study opera in-depth.
She later lost interest in classical music and returned to Brazil. Her first professional concert Veludo Azul (named after David Lynch's Blue Velvet film) was produced by Lula Buarque de Hollanda, and it debuted at Rio’s Jazzmania festival. Soon, some of her performances were captured on TV and also produced as the MM album in 1989. The album was produced by Motta and released through EMI. Her follow-up album Mai landed in 1991 and was again released by EMI. It was recorded in New York City with producer Arto Lindsay and released in the US by Blue Note.
Marisa’s second album Verde, Anil, Amarelo, Cor de Rosa e Carvão was released in 1994 and five years later she performed a duet with Antunes for some songs in his compilation Focus: O Essencial de Arnaldo Antunes. She later dropped the 16-song album Portas on her 54th birthday on July 1st, 2021. She was also a member of the group Tribalistas.
