Matthew Centrowitz Jr. is an American middle-distance runner who was born on October 18, 1989, in Beltsville, Maryland. When he was in high school, he was a tracker at Broadneck High School and got the best high school time of 2007. In that same year, he won a gold medal at the Pan American Junior Championships, held in São Paulo, and won a gold medal in the 1500 meters run. During his time in college, he ran for the Oregon Ducks like his father. He decided to become a professional runner in 2011, which led him to join the Nike Oregon Project. In 2011, he competed at the World Championships for the 1500 meters run, and placed third, and then ran the same race at the 2013 World Championships, in which he won a silver medal. In 2016, he participated in the World Indoor Championship and at the Olympic Games and ran the 1500 meters run. He won the gold in both events.
