Michael Yamashita is an American photographer, born in 1949 in San Francisco, California, but grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. He is best known for his work in National Geographic, as well as his many popular photographs and exhibitions. He started working for National Geographic in 1979 and has photographed a vast range of topics in many different countries, mostly in Asia. The California native has published more than 30 National Geographic magazine features, and more than 16 photographic books. His resume also includes the documentary films Marco Polo: The China Mystery Revealed and Treasure Fleet: The Adventures of Zheng He. He has also taught many photo workshops and has won many awards for his work, including awards from the National Press Photographers Association and the Asian American Journalists Association.
