The Hives is a musical group formed in 1993 in Fagersta, Sweden. The band comprises 'Howlin' Pelle Almqvist (lead vocals), Nicholaus 'Arson' Almqvist (lead guitar, backing vocals), Mikael 'Vigilante Carlstroem' Karlsson (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Christian 'Chris Dangerous' Grahn (drums, percussion), and Johan 'The Johan and Only' Gustafsson (bass guitar). Their genres of music include garage rock and garage punk.
The Hives released their debut EP, Oh Lord! When? How?, in 1996, followed by the full-length album Barely Legal in 1997, and 1998's a.k.a. I.D.I.O.T. EP under Burning Heart Records. Their sophomore album, Veni Vidi Vicious, brought them critical acclaim and earned a good certification in Sweden. It made Rolling Stone's Top 100 Albums of the Decade.
The Hives signed a deal with Alan McGee's Poptones label in 2001. Their compilation project, Your New Favourite Band, entered the UK Top 10 chart and went Platinum. Their 2014 album, Tyrannosaurus Hives, earned them their first US Gold album and five Swedish Grammis. They worked with Pharrell Williams and Dennis Herring on the album The Black and White Album (2007).
