Youssou N’Dour is a Sengalese singer who is known for his mbalax sound, a popular Senegalese genre. In 1979, N’Dour formed his own band, the Etoile de Dakar, where he performed music with the Sengelese tama (talking drum), popularising mbalax. The group’s sound was sung in Wolof, an ornamented vocal style from griot tradition. The group was later renamed to Super Etoile de Dakar, the group toured the US and Europe in the mid 1980’s to introduce mblax to the US and Europe. In 1986, N’Dour sang on rock artist Peter Gabriel’s international hit, ‘In Your Eyes’. The group toured with Gabriel alongside Bruce Springsteen in 1988. Dedicating much time to Super Etoile de Dakar, N’Dour released his first solo album in 1994 titled ‘The Guide’ (Wommat) which garnered high acclaim. After his release, he returned to Sengal to establish a record label, a recording studio, a radio station and a newspaper, as long as internet cafes. He returned to releasing his own music in 2004, with his album, ‘Egypt’, which won D’Nour a Grammy for Best Contemporary World Music album. Youssou D’Nour is still active in music today around the African community and is deemed of high regard in Sengal.
