Symphony X is a progressive metal band from Middletown, New Jersey. They are known for songs that incorporate complex structures, having been influenced by classical and symphonic music. Its members are Michael Romeo (guitars) Michael Pinella (keyboards), Jason Rullo (drums), Russell Allen (vocals), and Michael Lepond (bass).
Symphony X was founded from in 1994 the ashes of bands Gemini and Phantom’s Opera, two previous projects of Michael Romeo’s. He recorded a studio album that featured himself and keyboardist Michael Pinnella, which garnered significant attention, especially in Japan. Building on this, Romeo recruited drummer Jason Rullo, bassist Thomas Miller, and vocalist Rod Tyler, recording their first two albums within a year. By the release of their second album, The Damnation Game, Tyler had left and was replaced by current vocalist Russell Allen.
Divine Wings of Tragedy followed in 1997 to critical acclaim and became the band’s most popular and best-selling album. Twilight in Olympus (1998) brought the band further success, and after a significant lineup change they released V: The New Mythology Suite in 2000. Between 2006 and 2011 the band explored many themes ranging from the mythology (The Odyssey, 2006), literature (Paradise Lost, 2007), and science fiction (Iconoclast, 2011). Their latest album, Underworld was released in 2015 and is based on Dante’s Divine Comedy.
