Jason Douglas Newman, (born July 30th, 1977), is an American hip hop artist, prominently known as Brother Ali. After moving from Wisconsin to Michigan, Newman finally settled in Minnesota, where he also became a part of the RSE or Rhymesayers Entertainment, an independent hip hop label, that sponsors the Soundset Music Festival.
His debut album, Rites of Passage, which was released in the year 2000, also featured five time Minnesota music award winner, Desdamona. While Rites of Passage was initially released on a cassette with a very limited distribution, it was reissued later on, after the success of Newman’s newer albums.
His work includes the 2007 album, The Undisputed Truth, the 2009 album Us and the 2012 studio album, Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color, which peaked at number 5 on the US Rap charts. Besides these albums, he has also released EPs such as the 2012 The Bite Marked Heart and the 2013 Left in the Deck. He has collaborated with artists such as Jake One, Freeway, Atmosphere and Joell Ortiz, amongst others.
Brother Ali has received widespread international praise for his constant addressing of social issues. His lyrics are often based on the topics of inequalities for different races within the system and critiquing American politics. He often talks about how he feels that he should use his celebrity status to bring attention to issues that would not usually come to the forefront.
