Gus Van Sant is an American film director, screenwriter, painter, photographer, musician and author, born in Louisville, Kentucky on July 24, 1952. He is known for both his mainstream and independent films. Sant started his career directing television commercials in the Pacific Northwest. He made his feature-length film debut in 1985 with Mala Noche and has since directed the films Drugstore Cowboy, To Die For, Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester, Gerry, Elephant, The Sea of Trees, Restless, Milk, Last Days, Psycho and more. He has also directed episodes of the television shows The Devil You Know, When We Rise, and Boss. Sant has made appearances in the shows and films, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Portlandia, Entourage, and The Canyons. Gus has released two music albums, 18 Songs About Golf and Gus Van Sant. Throughout his career he has been nominated for numerous awards and has won a Gotham Award, two Film Independent Spirit Awards, a Christopher Award, four Cannes Film Festival Awards among others.
