Steve Cropper is an American guitarist, songwriter, and record producer born in Dora, Missouri on October 21, 1941. Cropper is the guitarist for the Stax Records house band, Booker T. & the M.G.’s. The band has backed prominent artists like Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas and others. Cropper was also a member of the Blues Brothers Band. In 1958 he helped form the band The Mar-Keys. The Mar-Keys released six studio albums and were the first house band for Stax Records. In 1962 Cropper helped form the band Booker T. & the M.G.’s with Booker T. Jones, Lewie Steinberg, and Al Jackson Jr. The band released 13 studio albums and backed a number of popular artists. In 1970 Cropper left Stax Records and set up TMI Studios with Jerry Williams and Ronnie Stoots. Cropper moved to Los Angeles in 1975 and reformed Booker T. & the M.G.’s. In 1992 Booker T. & the M.G.’s were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1978 Cropper became members of RCO All-Stars and became part of the Blues Brothers Band. Cropper was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010.
