Rapper and musician Mod Sun was born Derek Smith on March 10, 1987 in Bloomington, Minnesota. Mod Sun stands for “Movement on Dreams, Stand under None.” He played drums in the band Four Letter Lie from 2004 to 2009, then left to play drums with Scary Kids Scaring Kids.
While touring with Scary Kids Scaring Kids, he debuted his rapper persona, Mod Sun. After the band broke up in 2010, he began to pursue his rap career full time. In 2009, Mod Sun released three mixtapes: “I’ll Buy Myself,” “Let Ya Teeth Show,” and “How to make a MOD Sun.” His debut EP was released in 2010, entitled “The Hippy Hop EP.” He followed up with the 2011 EP, “In MOD We Trust,” and the mixtapes, “Health, Wealth, Success, & Happiness” and “Blazed by the Bell.” In 2012, he released the mixtape, “First Take,” and the EP, “Happy as Fuck.” He signed with Rostrum Records in 2014, and in March 2015, he released his debut album, “Look Up.” “Look Up” peaked at number six on the Billboard Alternative Albums chart, number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, number seven on the Billboard Independent Albums chart, and number eleven on the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart.
