Oscar de la Renta Bio

Oscar de la Renta, born Oscar Aristides Renta Fiallo, was a Dominican fashion designer who was born on July 22, 1932, in Santo Domingo. He began his artistic career at just 15 years old when he was admitted into the Santo Domingo Fine Arts Academy. At 18 years old he moved to Madrid, Spain, where he studied painting at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Quickly he began designing high fashion sketches to pay for his career and, through social connections, he got his first official client in 1956. He then started designing for famous fashion houses in Spain. The outcome was he became the apprentice of Cristóbal Balenciaga. In 1961 he moved to Paris to work with Antonio del Castillo in the fashion house Lanvin. In 1963 he moved to New York and began working for Elizabeth Arden. He later created his own brand, which jumped to fame after dressing the Americans first ladies Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush. He dressed many celebrities including Madonna, Scarlett Johansson, Cameron Diaz, and Shakira before passing away at 80 years old on October 20, 2014.
