Allah-Rakha (A. R.) Rahman (born A.S. Dileep Kumar) is an Indian musician, composer, and songwriter from Madras, India. Rahman was born January, 6 1967 to a Tamil family in southern India. His father was a musician who composed for a number of Tamil and Malayalam films. He began his musical training as a keyboardist early on and, through his father’s contacts, began performing with the Malayalam orchestra at age 11. He studied Western classical music at Oxford and converted to Islam at the age of 23.
Originally playing in bands, he began his professional career writing jingles for advertisements. While receiving an award he wrote for an advertisement, he met Bollywood director Mani Ratnam, who convinced Rahman to write film music. The first of these first efforts was 1992’s Roja, which became his first hit sound track. He also composed the score to Bollywood’s first Academy Award-nominated film, Lagaan, in 2001.
His reputation and credentials earned him work in Hollywood, scoring a number of films including Inside Man (2006), but his breakout score was in 2008 with the award-winning Slumdog Millionaire set in his native India. This earned him several Academy Awards, including one for best song for Jai Ho, the film’s closing track.
