Solange Piaget Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, on June 24, 1986. She was introduced to the entertainment industry early on thanks to her older sister Beyoncé’s involvement in the group Destiny’s Child. Solange went on tour with the girl group when she was only thirteen years old and acted as one of their backup dancers. She also sang with them on their album 8 Days of Christmas. Not wanting to live solely in the wake of her sister’s fame, Solange decided to go the independent route in her music career. Her father signed her to his record company when she was 16, and shortly after, she was appearing on albums such as Game Time by Lil’ Romeo and Simply Deep by Kelly Rowland.
Solange released her debut album entitled Solo Star in 2003, and meanwhile, she was helping her sister and the other two members of Destiny’s Child write songs, as well. In 2007, Solange signed a contract with Geffen Records, with whom she released her sophomore album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams in 2008. Although Solange was praised for her unique sound and her blends of ’60s and soul, sales from this album did not do as well as she had intended, and consequently she moved to a new label, Roc Nation, owned by her brother-in-law Jay-Z. In 2012, she released the EP True, which also did moderately well in the United States.
