Quincy Jones Bio
Quincy Delight Jones, Jr., known to the world simply as Quincy Jones, was born on March 14, 1933. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois, yet moved with his father and stepmother to Washington state when he was ten years old. After moving to New York City as a teenager, Jones was given the opportunity to begin arranging jazz songs for the big name performers such as Dinah Washington, Duke Ellington, and Ray Charles. In 1956, he went on an overseas tour with Dizzy Gillespie as his music director, and formulated his own band the following year when he came back to the U.S.
Quincy Jones was made the Vice-President of Mercury Records, and during the 1960s he started composing scores for movies and for television shows, such as The Bill Cosby Show and Sanford and Son. In 1973, Quincy Jones helped produced the Aretha Franklin album Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky). Throughout his very long and very prosperous career, Jones has been lauded for his work with Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra, Steven Spielberg, Miles Davis, and countless others. Quincy Jones has also won numerous Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award for his musical work on “Roots”, and is a multiple Academy Award nominee.
