Nellie McKay is a British singer, songwriter who was born on April 13, 1982, in London, but she grew up in Harlem, New York. She attended Manhattan School of Music to study jazz vocals but quit after two years. She started her career performing at night venues such as Sidewalk Cafe and Fez, where she became quite popular. She then signed with Columbia Records and released her first album in 2004 titled Get Away from Me, which was produced by Geoff Emerick. After some disagreements with the label, she parted ways and started her own label named Hungry Mouse and released her second album called Pretty Little Head in 2006. That same year she debuted on Broadway in the play The Threepenny Opera, produced by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, as Polly Peachum. For this role, she received a Theater World Award for Outstanding Performance.
