David Grisman Bio

David Grisman is an American mandolinist born in Hackensack, New Jersey on March 23, 1945. Grisman describes his style of music as Dawg Music, which is a combination of folk, bluegrass, and jazz. He started playing piano as a kid and as a teenager played piano, saxophone, and mandolin. While in college he played in the bands the Even Dozen Jug Band, the Kentuckians, and Earth Opera. He moved to San Francisco and joined the band Old & In the Way. While he played with Old & In the Way he was given the nickname Dawg by Jerry Garcia. In 1966 Grisman released his debut solo album titled Early Dog with Sugar Hill Records. He started the David Grisman Quintet in the 1970s and they released their debut album in 1988 self-titled The David Grisman Quintet. In the 80s he created a record label named Acoustic Disc that issued recordings for acoustic musicians. Over his career he released a number of albums, including Dawg Jazz/Dawg Grass, Dawgwood, Common Chord, Bluegrass Reunion, Shady Grove, Dawg Duos, The Pizza Tapes, Grateful Dawg, Dawgnation, Life of Sorrow, Dawg’s Groove, Satisfied, Muddy Roads, Frank ’n’ Dawg, New River, Tone Poems 3, Songs of Our Fathers and many more.
