Mary J. Blige, full name Mary Jane Blige (January 11, 1971) is a Grammy winning American singer, songwriter and actress. Born in Bronx, New York, began her music career with Uptown Records as a backup singer for local artist Father MC. In 1991, Sean “Puffy” Combs helped Blige produce her debut album, ‘What’s The 411?’ which received positive reviews and landed at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and was at the top of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The certified 3x platinum album won Blige two Soul Train Music awards in 1993 for Best R&B Album (Female) and Best New R&B Artist. Blige’s popularity in the R&B scene began to rise and thus led to the release of her second album, ‘My Life’ in 1993. Similarly to her first album, ‘My Life’ was a huge success, landing at number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number two on the US Billboard 200. In 1997, she went on to release her third album ‘Share My World’ followed by ‘Mary’ in 1999 which was aided by work from Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill and Elton John. Throughout Mary J. Bliges career, she had released a total of 13 albums with ‘Share My World’ in 1997 and ‘Growing Pains’ in 2007 being her most popular albums. Called the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige has worked with many huge artists such as P. Diddy, Beyonce, Drake, Rick Ross, Disclosure among many others along with going on tour with Jay-Z and Robin Thicke. On top of her music career, Mary J. Blige has also incorporated acting in her success having roles in movies such as Nina, Ghost Whisperer, Rock of Ages and her most recent film, Mudbound, in which she was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actress. Blige has left a legacy in the R&B soul genre and has been Grammy nominated 31 times and has won 9 of them.
