Aretha Franklin (b. March 25, 1942 – d. August 16, 2018) is a multiple Grammy award winning American singer and pianist. She is known for her worldwide hits ‘I Say a Little Prayer’, ‘Respect’ and ‘Freeway of Love’. Aretha is regarded as a child prodigy, having recorded her first record in 1956 at 13 at her father’s church titled Songs of Faith. In 1960, when Aretha was a young adult, she moved to New York where she was offered to sign with several labels such as RCA and Mowtown. Eventually, in 1961, she signed with Columbia Records, releasing her first album, ‘Aretha’ in the same year. She released two more albums with Columbia, titled ‘The Electrifying Aretha Franklin’ and ‘The Tender, the Moving, The Swinging Aretha Franklin’. In 1966, Aretha moved to Atlantic Records where she released a number of singles that fully propelled her career such as ‘I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)’, which reached number 1 on the R&B Billboard Charts, and ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’. Throughout the 60’s to 70’s, Aretha released ‘Lady Soul’, ‘Aretha Now’, ‘Spirit in the Dark’, ‘Young Gifted and Black’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ among many others.
