Rebecca Carlene Smith was born on September 26, 1955 in Nashville, Tennessee. In the 1970s, she began her solo recording career. During a concert at New York City’s The Bottom Line in 1979, she debuted a song about mate-swapping called Swap-Meat Rag from her album Two Sides to Every Woman. In 1987, Carter joined her sisters and her mother, reviving the Carter Family band.
Her career stalled, but in 1988, she met musician Howie Epstein and he helped her get her career back on track. Carter’s career took off with the album I Fell in Love (1990), and the song “I Fell in Love” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Female County Vocal Performance. In 1995, Carter’s Act of Treason was well received. In 2005, Victoria Hester played Carter in the movie Walk The Line. In 2014, she released her tenth studio album Carter Girl for Rounder Records.
