Secret Chiefs 3 is an American avant garde group led by composer Trey Spruance, who formerly formed part of the band Faith No More and Mr. Bungle. Secret Chiefs 3 is also the general name of seven different bands Holy Vehm, Electromagnetic Azoth and five more, which all represent a different dimension of Spruance’s philosophical and musical interests. That accounts for their incredible wide range of styles, which include death metal, electronic music, Persian, Indian and Middle East traditional music. Their always changing line up has been formed by artists Shahzad Ismaily, William Winant, Eyvind Kang and many others. The only constant member is Spruance. Their exploration of antic sounds added to their master way of creating unique atmospheres has made Spruance’s project thrive through over 20 years. He collaborated with Scott Walker to do a reinterpretation of Jacques Brel’s “La Chanson de Jacky” which turned out to be a huge success.
