Emerging onto the rock scene in 1978, Van Halen has become an international icon thanks to original members Eddie Van Halen on guitar, vocalist David Lee Roth, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Michael Anthony. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1978, and it was Eddie Van Halen’s guitar skills that brought them incredible attention due to his two-handed playing. The sounds the band created were unlike anything any rock fan had ever heard, coupled with singer Roth’s lavish performances. Van Halen soared to #19 on the charts and wound up selling over 6 million copies. Shortly after, the band released the singles “You Really Got Me”, a cover of the Kinks’ song, and “Runnin’ With the Devil”.
Their biggest effort before Roth left the band was the album 1984, featuring the tracks “Jump”, “I’ll Wait”, “Panama”, and “Hot for Teacher”. Roth, however, was replaced in June 1985 by Sammy Hagar. All totaled, Van Halen has released 12 full albums and 3 Compilation/Live Albums, totaling nearly 97 million albums sold worldwide. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
