The Cardigans Bio

Hailing from Jonkoping, Sweden, the pop group The Cardigans were formed in the early 1990s by Peter Svensson and Magnus Sveningsson, who were united by their passion for music, and were later joined by Bengt Lagerberg, Lars-Olof Johansson, and lead singer Nina Persson. They released their debut album Emmerdale in 1994, but they did not receive the recognition that they are now known for until the release of their second album, Life, in 1995. The album peaked at #20 on the Swedish Album charts and #51 on the UK Album charts. The album featured the track “Carnival”, which appeared in the 1997 movie Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.

Shortly after, the band released the single “Lovefool”, which shot to the #1 slot in the United States as well as in the UK, and was featured on the soundtrack to the movie Romeo & Juliet. The album that housed the single, First Band on the Moon, sold more than 2.5 million copies internationally and went Platinum in the United States and Japan, as well as Gold in the UK. The band would go on to release four more albums: Gran Turismo in 1998, which sold over 2 million copies worldwide, Forward/Record in 2000, Long Gone Before Daylight in 2004, and Super Extra Gravity in 2005.
