Phoenix Bio

Formed in Versailles, France, in 1999, the band Phoenix is comprised of members Thomas Mars (born Thomas Pablo Croquet), Deck d’Arcy, Laurent Mazzalai (who goes by Laurent Brancowitz), and Christian Mazzalai. After playing together simply as a garage band in Mars’ house, they decided to solidify their passion for music and released their first single through their independent label Ghettoblaster. The band was quickly signed to Source Records, through which they released the singles “Too Young” and “If I Ever Feel Better” off the 2000 album United. The former song was featured in the movie Lost in Translation. They followed this initial recognition with their second album Alphabetical in 2004, which kicked off their three-continent tour.

In the spring of 2009, Phoenix released the album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, featuring the widely played single “1901”, and the album eventually won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album that same year. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix eventually went Gold. They would go on to release Bankrupt! in 2013, and shortly after, appeared at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Lollapalooza, and at the Philadelphia “Made in America” Labor Day festival.
