Donavon Frankenreiter (December 10, 1972) is an American surf rock musician from Downey, California. Frankenreiter began his professional career as a surfer and was sponsored by Billabong at 14, moving him to Hawaii at a young age. Fortunately, the young Donavon rented a home from the parents of acoustic star Jack Johnson. Johnson and Frankenreiter became good friends and shared their love for guitar. Frankenreiter went on to play for a local Hawaii rock band called Sunchild before pursuing a solo career in 2002. Johnson’s career began to skyrocket, allowing him to create a label of his own called Bushfire Records where Frankenreiter signed on to release his debut album, ‘Donavon Frankenreiter’, in 2004. As said by Frankenreiter himself, Johnson gave him “the best way I could’ve started in the music scene”. His debut album produced two Top 10 hits titled ‘Life, Love Laughter’ at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and ‘Free’ featuring Jack Johnson landed at number 5. Frankenreiter’s next release was an EP titled ‘Move By Yourself’ after his partnership with label Lost Highway in 2006. In 2007, Frankenreiter toured throughout Brazil with bands such as G. Love, Matt Costa and Animal Liberation Orchestra amongst other surf artists and musicians. In the same year, he released ‘Recycled Recipes’, an acoustic cover EP followed by ‘Pass It Around’ in 2008. Shortly after his 2008 release, Frankenreiter moved back to Kauai, Hawaii to re-work his sounds and integrate more Hawaiian instruments such as the ukulele, lap steel and the slack key guitar. These were featured on his next three albums; ‘Revisited’ in 2010, ‘Glow’ in 2011 and a re-issue of ‘Recycled Recipes’, also in 2011. His most recent body of work, ‘Bass and Drum Tracks’ was released in 2019 under Liquid Tambourine Records.
