Amy Ruth Tan is an American author and screenwriter best known for writing romantic novels. She was born in Oakland, California, United States, on February 19, 1952. Amy began her writing career in the mid-1980s when she wrote the short stories Mother Tongue, and The Voice from the Wall. She became famous in 1989 when she wrote the novel The Joy Luck Club, and four years later, the novel was adapted into a film of the same name which features Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao, Vu Mai, and Tsai Chin. She has since written the books The Valley of Amazement, The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, Saving Fish from Drowning, and The Bonesetter's Daughter.
