Michelle Chongmi Zauner (who’s known by her stage moniker Japanese Breakfast) is a Korean-born American singer and songwriter who was born on March 29th, 1989 in Seoul, South Korea. Her parents moved to Oregon when she was an infant and she attended Bryn Mawr College.
While in college, Michelle played in a number of indie rock bands and later formed the Little Big League in 2011. She later started her solo Japanese Breakfast as part of a month-long song-a-day writing challenge and she dropped June in 2013. She continued writing solo, releasing her sophomore album Where Is My Great Big Feeling? and American Sound in the summer of 2014. She later released Tropical Jinx under the Little Big League in October the same year. Another album Psychopomp dropped in 2016 and Soft Sounds from Another Planet followed in July 2017, hitting upper numbers on multiple critics’ end-of-year lists. Jubilee dropped in June 2021, debuting on #7 on both the Independent and Alternative albums charts. She later wrote a memoir Crying in H Mart which peaked at #2 on the New York Times nonfiction best-seller list. She also supplied a soundtrack to Raw Fury’s video game Sable.
