Rapper and producer Ty Dolla Sign, who sometimes writes his name Ty$, was born Tyrone Griffin on April 13, 1985, in Los Angeles, California. His introduction to music began when he learned how to play the bass guitar at a young age, and from there, he learned how to play the keyboard, guitar, and the drums. Ty Dolla Sign had the opportunity to meet fellow rapper YG, with whom he created the song “Toot It and Boot It” in 2010, featured on YG’s mixtape. The next year, Ty Dolla Sign released his debut single “All Star”, which was followed by the more successful “My Cabana”, a single that reached #23 in Complex magazine’s list of the Best 50 songs of 2012.
Ty Dolla Sign signed with Atlantic Records in 2012, under whom he released his mixtape Beach House and then Beach House 2 in 2013. He was able to work with rappers Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J on the latter mixtape, who also helped him with his debut EP Beach House EP. XXL Magazine later chose him to be part of the freshman class of 2014, labeling him part of the Dirty Dozen young rappers to look out for that year. His breakout hit from that year is “Paranoid”, a single that peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts and which sold over 400,000 copies. After releasing another mixtape entitled Sign Language, Ty Dolla Sign released his debut album Free TC in 2014.
