Belly is a band formed in 1991 in Newport, Rhode Island. It was formed when Donelly (vocals, guitar) broke away from Throwing Muses in late 1991, forming Belly with fellow ex-Muse Fred Abong (bass), drummer Chris Gorman, and his guitarist brother Thomas. The band’s debut album Star was recorded in two sessions. The first in Nashville with Tracy Chisholm as the engineer, and the second in Liverpool with Gil Norton producing. Just before the release in January 1993, Abong left the band and was replaced by Gail Greenwood. Star got gold-record status in the United States and earned two Grammy nominations with over two million worldwide sales. Their second album King was released in February 1995 which wasn’t a commercial success.
