Jefferson Starship is a San Francisco, California-based American rock band founded in 1974 by a collection of musicians that included former members of Jefferson Airplane.
They released eight gold or platinum selling studio albums and one gold selling compilation between 1974 and 1984. In 1975, the album Red Octopus went quadruple platinum and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
While keeping the Jefferson Starship name, the band went through various personnel and genre changes throughout the years. The band name was discontinued in 1984, but it was revived in 1992 by a revival directed by Paul Kantner, which has lasted through his death in 2016.
