Steel Pulse Bio

The iconic British reggae band Steel Pulse originally included David Hinds, Ronald ‘Stepper’ McQueen, Basil Gabbidon, Selwyn ‘Bumbo’ Brown, Steve ‘Grizzly’ Nisbett, Alphonso ‘Fonso’ Martin, and Michael Riley. The band stood out from other reggae bands by mixing reggae with pop and rock music. With their debut album, Handsworth Revolution, and their follow-up albums, Tribute to the Martyrs, and True Democracy, under their belt, they tried to garner an international audience. Standing out from the crowd, the band opened for punk rock bands including The Clash, The Stranglers, Generation X, and The Police. They changed band members over the years, including Gabbidon and McQueen being replaced by Carlton Bryan and Alvin Ewen. The band went on to win a Grammy for Babylon The Bandit. They followed-up with the albums State of Emergency, and Victims. After another band reshuffle, they released the live album, Rastafari Centennial, which scored a Grammy nomination. Steel Pulse, at the request of President Bill Clinton, became the first band to perform for a presidential inauguration. They continued releasing music over the years, including the albums Vex, Rage and Fury, Living Legacy, African Holocaust, and Mass Manipulation.
