Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary met in 1992 and formed an electronic music duo. They made music using the name Fundamental Knowledge releasing EPs acid techno and electro in 1994. They changed the name to Modeselektor in 1996 in Berlin, Germany.
They started playing live sets in Berlin, and eventually began working with the design collective Pfadfinderei. After signing for Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label in 2000, they released a series of EPs starting with 2002’s In Loving Memory. Modeselektor also remixed tracks by Miss Kittin, Knifehandchop, and Ellen Allien herself. Their debut album Hello Mom! was released in 2005 and featured guest appearances by Paul St. Hilaire, TTC, and Sasha Perera (also known as Jahcoozi).
Modeselektor's fourth full-length album Who Else surfaced in 2019 succeeding a lot of other albums and singles.
