Katatonia is a Swedish heavy metal band founded in 1991 in Stockholm by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band began as a studio-only effort for the duo to express their love of death metal.
As the band's reputation grew, they added more band members for live performances, albeit outside of the founders, the lineup was a continually changing, revolving door of musicians during the 1990s, notably including Mikael Kerfeldt of the band Opeth for a while.
After two death/doom albums, Dance of December Souls (1993) and Brave Murder Day (1996), vocal cord difficulties and new musical influences moved the band away from the shouted vocals of death metal and toward a more traditional, melodic kind of heavy metal music.
