Moby Bio

Moby, born Richard Melville Hall on September 11th, 1965 in Harlem, New York is an American music producer, DJ, singer, songwriter and photographer. He began playing guitar for the hardcore punk band Vatican Commandos in the 1980s and the group Ultra Vivid Scene. He stylized his solo moniker as Moby from his relation to the author Herman Melville who wrote Moby Dick. He also released music under the names of Voodoo Child and Schaumgummi.  Moby specializes in the genres of electronica, ambient, techno, and punk rock.

In 1988 Moby signed to the label Instinct and got his breakthrough with the remix to the song “Go.” The single reached the Top 10 in the UK in 1991. In 1992 he released his self-titled debut album. In 1993 Moby signed to Mute Records and released an EP entitled Move. He followed that up with the release of his album Everything Is Wrong in 1995. The album earned critical praise from Spin Magazine.  In 1997 he released a music collection called I Like to Score. The remix of the “James Bond Theme” was used in the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. In1999 Moby released an album called Play. The album sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Every song on the album was bought and licensed by major studios and TV shows.
