Asia – not to be confused with the continent, none of which band members are native – is a progressive rock supergroup formed from the left-overs of the bands Yes, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and King Crimson. In its present incarnation Asia includes longest-serving member Geoff Downes (keyboards, backing vocals), Billy Sherwood (lead vocals, bass), Sam Coulson (guitar, backing vocals), and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). Notable former members of Asia from other bands include Chris Slade of AC/DC, Mike Sturgis of Iron Maiden, and Al Pitrelli of Megadeth.
Like most supergroups, Asia is a band that gets together and releases albums whenever its primary members can get away from their other commitments. They released their self-titled debut studio album in 1982; it sold multi-platinum. Their most recent release after twelve albums is “Gravitas” (2014), an unusual run for a supergroup.
