Sons of Apollo is a supergroup, which tend to be notoriously short-lived, but are sublime while they last. The progressive metal supergroup houses Jeff Scott Soto (vocalist, formerly of Talisman), Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (guitar, formerly of Guns ‘n’ Roses), Billy Sheehan (bass, formerly with David Lee Roth), Derek Sherinian (keyboard, formerly of Alice Cooper), and Mike Portnoy (drums, formerly of Dream Theater). Sherinian was also in Dream Theater, which is how he and Portnoy brought this project together.
With a smashing line-up like that, you really hope Sons of Apollo gets past their first album, “Psychotic Symphony” (2017). That debut dropped to positive reviews, even given that the magazines in question held the act to such high standards. Due to the erratic touring schedules of each of the bandmates, it took three years to produce this album. This is the typical problem with supergroups.
