Stone Temple Pilots (often abbreviated “STP”) is the third band of the triad, with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, that ushered in the advent of alternative / grunge rock and the death of 1980s-style metal. The band was founded by late lead man Scott Weiland and bassist Robert DeLeo. They met in the southern California music scene and recruited Dean DeLeo (guitar) and Eric Kretz (drums). They were a hit playing gigs at clubs, and signed to Atlantic Records in 1992.
Stone Temple Pilots never looked back. Their first album, “Core” (1992) sold multi-platinum and charted top-40 around the world; singles from that album, “Plush,” “Wicked Garden,” and “Creep,” topped charts and were omnipresent on the radio. Their first two albums sold fourteen million copies combined, and their singles have continued to chart throughout the 1990s into the 2000s. The band has recently had to cope with the loss of Scott Weiland and then Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, both former lead vocalists now deceased. Their current vocalist is Jeff Gutt of the band Dry Cell.
