Mackenzie Dern Bio
Mackenzie is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner from Glendale, Arizona. She was born on March 24, 1993 in Phoenix, Arizona. Her father, Megaton, was also a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.
She began learning Jiu-Jitsu when she was 3 years old. Her father would take her to his Jiu-Jitsu academy while he taught classes. She had the lofty goal of becoming the black belt world champion. Throughout her four years at Ironwood High School, her teachers supported Mackenzie during her training and competition. Mackenzie’s first competition was in 1999 but she lost by 2 points. She competed in her first World Championship by age 14 and she won the gold medal in the blue belt juvenile division. She was already traveling extensively outside the U.S. for competition, and her father, spotting her talent, started training her full time. At 16 she began competing in the adult division where she has also won gold. By 2009, Mackenzie was a four-time World Champion.
She has won 12 World titles, from 2007 through 2012 – 7 medals at the Worlds with Gi and 5 medals at the Worlds No Gi, all before reaching black belt level. In 2012, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation opened the female brown belt category and Mackenzie became the first female Brown Belt Absolute Champion. She is one of the most decorated female competitors in Jiu-Jitsu with Pan American, European, National and International titles.
