Charles Phoenix (born December 21, 1962 in Upland, California, United States) is a famous historian, humorist, showman, tour guide, food crafter, and author most renowned for his live comedy slide show performances, madcap Test Kitchen videos, and “field trip” tours. Charles has appeared on television as a judge on Food Network’s Cake Wars: Christmas. He also guest starred on Storage Wars, Jay Leno’s Garage, Conan, and Martha Stewart, and NPR.
Charles grew up in Ontario, California around theme parks, shopping malls, and his dad’s used car lots. In those magical moments, Charles found thrift shops, a discovery that would lead to a lifelong vintage shopping spree. He enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in 1992. Soon, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a fashion designer and a classic car dealer. During the mid-90s, Charles discovered a shoebox full of vintage Kodachrome slides marked “Trip Across the United States, 1957.” He soon began collecting orphaned vintage slide photographs. This inspired the premiere of his retro slide show performance career (1998).
Charles is the author of many colorful, collectible coffee table books that celebrate mid-century Southern California, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Kodachrome road trips, and his native Pomona Valley. His latest is Addicted to Americana!
