Gretchen Peters is an American country/folk singer-songwriter born on November 14, 1957 in Bronxville, New York. Shortly after her birth her family moved to Boulder, Colorado where she was raised. She moved to Nashville in the late 1980s where she began work as a songwriter for acts including: Martina McBride; Etta James; Trisha Yearwood; Patty Loveless; George Strait; Anne Murray; Neil Diamond; and Bryan Adams.
In 1995, she won the Country Music Association award for Song of the Year for penning “Independence Day,” a single performed by Martina McBride. Throughout her career, she has received two Grammy Award nominations in 1995 and 1996 for Best Country Song and one Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song in 2003. In 2014 Gretchen was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame for her contributions to country music. Along with being a songwriter for so many major artists, Peters has released seven studio albums of her own. Her single “When You Are Old” from 1996 peaked at #68 on the US Country charts. She has also released “The Secret of Life” in 1997, and “Hello Cruel World” in 2012.
