The Kinks Bio

The Kinks is a very influential British rock band formed in London in 1963. It originally consisted of brothers Ray(vocals) and Dave Davies (guitar), Peter Quaife (bass), and Mick Avory (drums), now part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the U.K. Hall of Fame. Their songs had been covered by artists like Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age. A string of 1964 debut singles became instant hits, including “You Really Got Me”. The success continued with the late 60s albums “The Kink Controversy” and “Face to Face”. After some minor hits, 1968’s album “The Village Green Preservation Society” marked a phase of critical acclaim but little commercial success. The band regained public attention with their single “Lola” in 1970. The band started experimenting with their sound in later releases, including a rock opera. In the late 70s, the band opted for a more commercial approach and toured the U.S. extensively. In 2018, The Kinks released a 50th-anniversary reissue “Preservation Society”.
